How much does it cost to rent an electric bike in Sydney?

Short answer: renting an electric bike from us in Sydney costs between $60 and $100 a week, and the number you land on depends almost entirely on how long you commit for. The longer the term, the lower the weekly rate. On top of that you pay a refundable bond, and that is where most of the confusion — and most of the arguments — happen.

This guide sets out exactly what we charge at Tech E-Bike, what the bond is for, and what else you should ask any rental shop before you hand over money. Prices are current as at October 2026.

What a weekly electric bike rental actually costs in Sydney

Across inner Sydney, long-term e-bike rental for delivery riders and commuters generally sits in a band of about $60 to $90 a week. Short, flexible hire sits higher — often $80 to $100 a week — because the shop carries the risk of the bike sitting idle between hires.

Here is our own pricing, in full. All prices include GST.

PlanWeeklyMinimum termBond
Flexible$100 down to $801 to 3 weeks$300 to $400
Standard$704 weeks$200
Long-Term$608 weeks$200

There are two optional cover plans on top: Gold at $10 a week covers servicing and repairs, and Platinum at $20 a week adds mechanical repairs, theft protection and reduced liability. Neither is compulsory. Every plan is set out on our e-bike rental page.

New rider offer: $35 a week for your first two weeks

If you have not rented from us before, your first two weeks on the Standard plan are $35 a week instead of $70. After that it returns to the normal $70 a week. The four-week minimum and the $200 bond still apply, so your first four weeks come to $210 instead of $280 — a saving of $70.

We are spelling that out precisely because half-price headlines that hide the conditions are how people end up feeling misled. The offer is real, and so are its limits.

The bond: what it is, and when you get it back

The bond is the part people ask about most, and it is worth understanding before you sign anything — with us or with anyone else.

A bond is a refundable security deposit. It is not a fee and it is not rent. It sits against the bike while you have it, and it comes back to you when the bike comes back to us in the condition it left in, with nothing outstanding on the account.

Ours is $200 on the Standard and Long-Term plans, and $300 to $400 on the Flexible plan — short hires carry a higher bond because the bike spends less time earning and more time changing hands.

What can be deducted

  • Unpaid hire. Any weeks owing at the end come off the bond.
  • Damage beyond normal wear. Parts replaced because of damage, not because they wore out.
  • Returning the battery flat. We ask for at least 80 per cent charge; below that there is a $10 recharge fee.
  • Returning the bike dirty. A $30 cleaning fee if the bike or the bag comes back very dirty.
  • Late return. More than an hour late is $15 a day for the first 24 hours, then the full daily rate.
  • Lost items. Keys, remote, helmet or lock are $25 each; a charger is $100.

The two-week notice rule

This one catches people out, so read it twice: you need to give us two weeks’ notice before you return the bike. Not two days. If you hand the bike back without notice, or before your minimum term is up, the remaining rent may still apply — and it can come out of the bond.

It is not a trick. It is how we plan the fleet — a bike coming back is a bike we can prepare for the next rider. But it is a real condition with real money attached, so we would rather you knew it now than found out at the counter.

What is included in the weekly price

  • A factory-built electric bike from our rental fleet, with its charger
  • Helmet, bike lock, battery lock, phone charger and a thermal delivery bag
  • Free regular servicing and maintenance
  • Phone and WhatsApp support when something goes wrong

You choose your battery when you sign up, from about 6–8 hours of riding up to 10–12 hours. If you need more in a day, battery swap at our Redfern shop is an optional extra: $10 for a single swap, or $40 a week for unlimited swaps.

In NSW you must wear an approved bicycle helmet, and one comes with every rental. For the rest of the rules — where you can ride, lights and power limits — check the NSW Government e-bike FAQs. Our rental cover is not insurance, so we recommend arranging your own personal health and liability cover before you ride.

Five questions to ask any e-bike rental shop

Whether you rent from us or from someone else, these five questions will tell you what a week actually costs:

  1. What is the weekly rate at each term length? A single headline price usually means the cheap number is attached to the longest commitment.
  2. How much is the bond, and what comes out of it? Ask for the list, not a reassurance.
  3. How much notice do I have to give to stop? Notice periods and bond deductions are where a lot of rental disputes start.
  4. What happens when the bike breaks? Is repair included, is there a swap bike, and how long will you be off the road?
  5. What safety standard is the battery tested to? Battery safety is a growing priority in NSW, so ask to see the paperwork.

Renting versus buying

At $60 a week on the Long-Term plan, a year of renting comes to about $3,120. The VINXS cargo bike our rental fleet runs on costs from $1,299 to buy, so on pure arithmetic buying wins after about five months.

That is not the whole picture, though. Renting includes servicing and repairs — costs that fall on you when you own the bike. For a delivery rider putting serious kilometres on a bike, those are not small. A worn drivetrain, a failed controller or a battery past its best can each run into hundreds of dollars.

The honest rule of thumb: if you are riding for work and the bike earns its keep every day, renting is usually the lower-stress option. If you are commuting a few times a week and can handle a service bill, buying is cheaper over a year. If you want to end up owning the bike but cannot pay for it up front, rent-to-own sits in between — your weekly payments go towards ownership.

A note on the converted e-bike train ban

Since 1 November 2025, converted e-bikes — ordinary bicycles retrofitted with a motor and battery — have been banned on Sydney Trains, NSW TrainLink and Sydney Metro services. The penalty notice is $400, with a higher maximum if it goes to court. Factory-built e-bikes are not covered by the ban (Transport for NSW).

Every bike we rent is factory-built, so the ban does not apply to it. If you are looking at a cheap rental elsewhere, it is worth asking the question directly.
