OUXI V8 Ultra vs Ultra Max vs Ultra Mini: which one should you buy?

Online, the OUXI V8 Ultra, the V8 Ultra Max and the V8 Ultra Mini look like the same bike photographed three times. They share a motor, a brake set-up and a warranty, and the product photos do not make the differences obvious.

Three things actually separate them: how far the battery takes you, how big the wheels are, and how big the bike is. Everything else is shared. Here is how we would talk you through it at our shop on Regent Street in Redfern.

The short version

  • Riding to work and back around inner Sydney. The OUXI V8 Ultra, $1,299. One 48V 15Ah battery, 50-60 km.
  • Long days, delivery shifts, or you simply hate charging. The OUXI V8 Ultra Max, $1,499. Two batteries, 100-120 km.
  • Shorter rider, narrow hallway, small apartment lift. The OUXI V8 Ultra Mini, $1,099. 16-inch wheels, 30-45 km.

If you already recognised yourself in one of those lines, that is probably your bike. The rest of this page is the detail behind it.

OUXI V8 Ultra – $1,299

This is the bike most of our customers ride to work on, and it is the one we reach for when somebody describes an ordinary inner-Sydney commute. One 48V 15Ah battery covers 50-60 km, which for most riders is more than a week of commuting rather than a day. The battery lifts out, so it charges at a desk or on a kitchen bench instead of in a hallway.

Full suspension front and rear plus 20 x 4.0 fat tyres take the edge off Sydney road surfaces: tram tracks, patched bitumen, the kerb cut you take every morning. The long bench seat means a backpack, a toolbag or a week of shopping rides behind you without any of it digging in.

OUXI V8 Ultra Max – $1,499

On paper this is the Ultra with a second 48V 15Ah battery on board. That doubles the quoted range to 100-120 km, which is the difference between planning your day around a charger and not thinking about it. For delivery riders that is a full shift; for commuters it is roughly a week between charges.

The $200 between it and the Ultra buys exactly one thing: you stop watching the battery gauge. If you have ever finished a ride on your last bar, or you cannot charge where you park, that $200 is the cheapest part of this decision. If you ride 15 km a day and charge at home, it is $200 you do not need to spend.

OUXI V8 Ultra Mini – $1,099

The Mini takes the same moped-style fat tyre shape and shrinks it. The 16 x 4.0 tyres and the shorter, lower frame make it noticeably easier to handle in traffic and easier to live with in an apartment: easier to get into a lift, easier to turn in a hallway, and it takes up less of the balcony.

It is the bike we recommend to shorter riders, who often find a full-size fat tyre bike a stretch to get a foot down on. The 36V 10.4Ah battery gives 30-45 km, which covers most inner-Sydney trips several times over but is not the bike for long days. It is also the only one of the three that comes in more than one colour: black, blue, pink or green.

What is identical on all three

Worth saying plainly, because it is where a lot of the questions go:

  • 250W motor with assistance limited to 25 km/h
  • Disc brakes front and rear
  • Removable battery on every model
  • 12-month warranty on motor and battery
  • Assembly and a safety check available as an add-on for Redfern pick-up and Sydney delivery (bikes sent Australia-wide travel boxed)

If you need paperwork for a particular model, for an employer, an insurer or a strata committee, ask us before you buy and we will show you exactly what we hold for that model.

About those range numbers

Treat 30-45, 50-60 and 100-120 km as the range each bike is quoted to deliver, not as a promise about your particular Tuesday. Real range moves with rider weight, how much you pedal, how much of your route goes uphill, tyre pressure and cold weather. Soft tyres alone will cost you more than most people expect.

A comfortable rule of thumb is to keep your daily route within about 60 per cent of a bike’s quoted range. If you are right at the top of it, go up a model rather than hoping. It is an easy regret to avoid.

If you need to carry things, look elsewhere in the range

All three of these are commuter bikes with a useful bench seat, not load carriers. If the job involves crates, a delivery bag or a passenger, the OUXI Q10 longtail is the bike built for it, and the rest of the cargo e-bikes sit alongside it. The full fat tyre range has everything in one place.

Come and see them

Fifteen minutes in the shop settles this faster than any table. Sitting on the bike tells you whether the frame suits you, and lifting a battery out tells you whether you would actually do that twice a week.
